These years include a lot of free play, outdoor notebooking, and games. Class time is spent learning to read, copying examples of fine writing, hands-on mathematics, and memorizing poetry. All along the way, the people in Form I are learning how to organize their belongings and themselves, cooperate with instructions, and communicate in class and with their peers.
This level of instruction includes young people who are becoming more independent as readers and writers and enjoy sharing their work in class. Students of this age will begin to study their own math lessons, and we use class time to test and review missing concepts. Students become adept at cursive handwriting, and with because of their increased dexterity and focus, art and crafts become an important part of learning.
Students in this level are moving to deeper levels of emotional and symbolic connections. The students form a sense of belonging in the classroom. We study challenging material from classic literature within in the context of a close-knit group. Science and math become more challenging and time consuming, but we seek to use living books and Christian context as a unifying background for wisdom.
These are the final years of home instruction, and students are often involved in dozens of extra-curricular activities, entrepreneurial work, apprenticeships, or college preparation. Our class time and assignments will include some free-study to accommodate this, but we will continue polishing up in composition, higher math, science labs, and challenging history and literature projects as well as communication and leadership skills.
Areas of study at Evergreen are natural history, geography, Shakespeare, math, art, composers, great artists, folk songs and hymns, dance, literature, poetry, Latin, foreign language, crafts, citizenship, composition, bible, science, and history.
On most weeks of the school year, we have one afternoon workshop where we invite a guest teacher who is an expert in their field to teach us for multiple sessions. Quilting, rabbitry, and oil painting are some of the series we will have this year.
Every Christmas, the students work together with their families to make some of their favorite crafts to sell. We gather, bring our favorite dishes to share, and shop. The children are always delighted to show parents, grandparents, and friends what they have made for this event.
